"For he that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth [him]; howbeit IN THE SPIRIT he speaketh mysteries."
This verse of scripture gives us a very good definition of speaking in tongues.
First, speaking in tongues is speaking to God in a language unknown to men.
We also read that when a person speaks in tongues, he is speaking mysteries in the spirit, that no man understands.
Thus we can infer that speaking in tongues is speaking mysteries in the spirit to God in a language that no man understands.
It is a private communication between the speaker and God.
We also read from the second chapter of Acts that speaking in tongues is speaking by the Spirit of God.
Acts 2:4
_And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance._
They spoke in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. In other words they were speaking in tongues by the Spirit of God.
Therefore, speaking in tongues is speaking in the spirit by the Spirit to God Who is a Spirit.
Everything about speaking in tongues is in the spirit.
We become more conscious of spiritual things and the spiritual realm as we speak in tongues more.
In addition our understanding of spiritual things appreciates greatly as we speak in tongues more.
